Amarante sits an hour inland from Porto on the river Tâmega, and the view of it from the far bank, the bridge, the church of São Gonçalo, the houses stacked above the water, is one of the set pieces of northern Portugal. Casa da Calçada looks straight at it.

The building is a 16th-century palace with golden baroque interiors, and it has been a Relais & Châteaux member for years. The rooms were refurbished in 2025 and are contemporary and crisp, a deliberate counterpoint to the maximalism downstairs rather than an attempt to match it. There are 35 in total.

The food is the strongest part of the offer. Largo do Paço holds a Michelin star under chef Francisco Quintas and works in a modern Portuguese register. Alongside it there is Canto Redondo, À Margem, where breakfast is served with the river below, and Ciao Tílias for Italian cooking on the terrace over the Tâmega. Four kitchens in a 35-room hotel is unusual, and it means you can stay several nights without eating the same thing twice.

The estate makes its own vinho verde, and holds what it says is the oldest certified vineyard in the region, in the family's hands since 1917. Wine tastings, cellar visits and tours of the surrounding quintas are all arranged from the hotel.

Elsewhere there are indoor and outdoor pools, a spa and wellness centre, gardens, and an 18-hole golf course nearby.

The Michelin Guide awarded it two Keys, which puts it in the small national group alongside Torre de Palma, Vermelho and The Yeatman.

Position is the practical argument: Porto is under an hour west, the Douro under an hour south-east, and Guimarães and Braga are close. Amarante itself is small, handsome and quiet after dark.

Who it’s for

People who want a proper palace hotel within an hour of both Porto and the Douro.

Worth knowing

Rooms were refurbished in 2025 and are contemporary, deliberately at odds with the baroque public rooms. Amarante is a small town and quiet at night.

The hotel’s own site is the first link on purpose: a small hotel keeps more of what you pay there, and requests — a particular room, a late arrival — reach someone who can act on them. Compare it against the aggregator before you decide; neither link earns this site anything.
