Ponte de Lima claims to be the oldest town in Portugal, and its Roman bridge over the Lima is the reason for the name. Carmo's sits five kilometres outside it in farmland, and it was built rather than converted.

The architect was Carvalho Araújo, who also did the monastery conversion at Vila do Conde, and his material here is concrete. What he set against it is the interesting part: Portuguese joinery in pau-santo, ivory and rosewood, Art Deco and Indo-Portuguese pieces, and salvaged fittings from old churches. It should be an awkward combination and instead reads as a private house assembled over time.

There are fifteen rooms and suites at the centre, most around 33 square metres, individually decorated with family photographs on the walls. In 2024 the family added three two-bedroom villas among the Italian cypress, olive trees and Loureiro vines, each with its own pool, and three glamping-style tents for anyone wanting to be further out.

The spa is where the hotel earns its reputation. It runs aromatherapy and Ayurvedic rituals using organic herbs and essential oils, and its signature is a bath of pure goat's milk, offered in tribute to Cleopatra and taken with a glass of champagne. There are indoor and outdoor pools.

Food is served to residents only, by arrangement, under chef João Araújo, working with Minho produce and an all-Portuguese wine list. The estate has its own Wine Atelier where vinho verde is made and tasted by candlelight.

It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and was named by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the best new hotels in the world in 2013.

Porto is around 45 minutes, Braga and Viana do Castelo closer, and Santiago de Compostela is reachable as a day trip. Note that classifications vary between four and five stars across listings.
