Rua Mouzinho da Silveira was cut through the old city in the 19th century to connect the river to the centre, and the palace at number 228 went up in 1884. Torel took it on and organised it around the Portuguese maritime trade, which given where you are standing is not an arbitrary choice: this was a city that grew rich on what came off ships.

The structure is literal. Each floor is a continent the ships reached, Africa at the bottom, then America, then Asia. Each room is named for something they brought back: coffee, sugarcane, tea, porcelain, silk, cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, malagueta. Nano Design handled the interiors, working with natural colours, rich materials and plants, and it stays on the right side of the line between evocative and costume.

There are 23 keys in total, but they are in two places. Twelve rooms and suites occupy the palace itself. Eleven apartments sit 200 metres away on Rua das Flores, in a separate building, which suits longer stays and families but means less of the hotel around you. Worth knowing which one you are booking.

Bartolomeu Bistro & Wine handles the food, Portuguese cooking with a French inflection and a serious wine list, with the kitchen sourcing most of its ingredients locally. There is a library, an honesty bar, and spa treatments delivered in the room rather than a dedicated spa.

The hotel holds one Michelin Key and made the Condé Nast Traveler Hot List in 2020.

For position, this is about as central as Porto gets: São Bento station 200 metres, Avenida dos Aliados 350, the Ribeira 350, the Clérigos tower 450, and the Dom Luís I bridge 500. Pets are welcome.

Book direct where you can

The hotel’s own site is the first link on purpose: a small hotel keeps more of what you pay there, and requests — a particular room, a late arrival — reach someone who can act on them. Compare it against the aggregator before you decide; neither link earns this site anything.
