Quinta da Comporta - Wellness Boutique Resort
Sixty-one rooms around a terracotta courtyard where the grain stores stood, over the rice fields.
Miguel Câncio Martins is best known for designing the Buddha Bar in Paris, which is not the obvious background for a rice-field hotel in the Alentejo. What he built here, though, is restrained: a low complex organised around an original terracotta courtyard where the estate's grain stores once stood, with the restaurant and spa arranged around it.
The hotel opened in 2019 and takes the agricultural setting as its whole design language. Rooms are a refined version of the traditional Comporta wooden house, using honey-coloured timber, wicker and sisal, with tall windows and a lot of light. The outdoor pool looks straight out over the rice paddies, which in the growing season are flooded and mirror-flat, and in autumn turn gold.
There are 61 rooms and suites, which makes this the largest of the Comporta properties by some margin, along with separate villas that have their own pools. The scale means it operates as a full-service resort rather than the intimate retreats nearby, and that is worth knowing before you book: more facilities, more people.
Those facilities are good. The spa runs treatments built around locally grown rice, there is a hammam, a salon, a gym and a cinema room. The bio-gardens were laid out by the French gardener Louis Albert Broglie. Breakfast uses figs picked from the garden.
Carvalhal beach is around fifteen minutes away by bicycle, and Pego and Comporta village are close. Lisbon is roughly an hour and a half by car.
It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Travellers who want Comporta's landscape with a proper spa and a full-service hotel behind it.
At 61 rooms this is the largest of the Comporta properties, and it reads as a resort rather than a retreat. Carvalhal beach is about fifteen minutes by bicycle.

The hotel’s own site is the first link on purpose: a small hotel keeps more of what you pay there, and requests — a particular room, a late arrival — reach someone who can act on them. Compare it against the aggregator before you decide; neither link earns this site anything.
