We found MS Collection Arouca to be an exceptionally comfortable retreat that gets the fundamental luxuries exactly right. The guest rooms are impeccably quiet, functioning as private sanctuaries complete with excellent beds and fantastic showers. For an added layer of relaxation, we highly recommend the on-site spa services, which were excellent. Ultimately, it is the small, thoughtful details that truly elevate the experience here—from the daily treats left in our room to the seamless convenience of the staff handling our car charging.

Beyond the historic architecture, the true highlight of our stay was the immaculate hospitality. Every member of the staff was consistently warm and proactive, ensuring we felt completely looked after each day. Breakfast—which was included with our room—was a particular standout, featuring a generous spread of self-select items alongside excellent made-to-order dishes. In the evenings, the lobby bar became our favorite anchor; the wonderful bartender not only crafted fantastic specialty drinks but also provided genuinely great conversation. It is a rare hotel that manages to feel this intimately welcoming while executing five-star standards so flawlessly.

The profile248 words · first person

Built directly into the meticulously restored south wing of a 10th-century monastery, MS Collection Arouca is a true five-star retreat where centuries of history meet contemporary luxury.

While the architecture and the heritage of the building are undeniably breathtaking, the real story here is the service. Every single detail is highly calibrated to make guests feel completely pampered, creating an atmosphere that is deeply relaxing without feeling overly formal.

The guest rooms are impeccable, designed to function as private, quiet sanctuaries hidden behind ancient stone walls. The restoration honors the historic bones of the monastery while seamlessly integrating modern luxury.

The shared spaces encourage a complete slowing of pace. The property features peaceful, beautifully manicured gardens and stunning swimming pools (including a serene indoor pool and a seasonal outdoor pool). It is very easy to lose an entire afternoon just wandering the grounds or lounging by the water.

Operating at a true five-star standard, the hotel features an elegant on-site restaurant serving local and international gastronomy, as well as a lobby bar. Breakfast is a generous, high-quality spread that sets you up perfectly for a day of exploring. Because the property is so comfortable, you may find yourself opting to dine here rather than venturing out into town.

Located in the heart of Arouca, the hotel is surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the Arouca Geopark. More importantly, it serves as the ultimate luxurious basecamp for crossing the famous 516 Arouca suspension bridge or hiking the Paiva Walkways.

Who it’s for

Travelers seeking the perfect place to reward yourself with spa treatments, excellent food, and total relaxation after a thrilling (and tiring) day walking the suspension bridge.

Worth knowing

The hotel features a comprehensive spa, a fitness center, valet parking, and electric car charging—details that make the logistics of your stay entirely frictionless.

The building

Mosteiro de Arouca
Originally founded in the 10th century, the Monastery of Santa Maria de Arouca gained immense prominence in the 1200s when D. Mafalda—daughter of the second King of Portugal—took residence here and introduced the Cistercian order. Over the centuries, it grew into one of the country's most significant and wealthy convents, evolving into the sprawling, classical and baroque architectural masterpiece you see today. It operated as a religious sanctuary for nearly a thousand years until the state took ownership following the death of the last resident nun in 1886. Today, MS Collection occupies the thoughtfully restored south wing, bringing a massive, monumental piece of Portuguese history into a new era of hospitality.
