L'AND Vineyards
Suites with roofs that slide open to the sky, on a vineyard within sight of Évora's hills.
The building is the reason to come. Marcio Kogan and Studio MK27 of São Paulo designed L'AND as a piece of Brazilian late modernism dropped into the Alentejo: low horizontal volumes, deep shade, a lake, and an aesthetic that owes more to the Aman idea of luxury than to anything Portuguese. It should feel imported and somehow doesn't, because the Alentejo's own architecture is also about mass, whitewash and keeping the sun out.
The signature is the Sky Suites. Their roofs retract, so you can lie in bed and look straight up. The Alentejo has very little light pollution and the effect on a clear night is the thing guests remember. Twenty-one of the suites have this, along with the lake villas, so it is worth booking the category rather than hoping.
Even the fixed-roof suites are generous, running to around 120 square metres with outdoor terraces, fireplaces, private patios and custom beds. There are 42 rooms and suites in all.
The estate is a working winery, and wine runs through everything: tastings, a cellar, vinotherapy treatments in the spa, and a restaurant that has been among the better kitchens in the region for years. There is a café and lounge deck built out over the lake, which is where most people end up in the late afternoon.
Évora's medieval hilltop skyline is visible in the distance from some of the suites.
The practical advantage is proximity. Lisbon airport is around 65 miles away, under an hour by car, which makes this the easiest of the serious Alentejo properties to reach. Note that the hotel is a Relais & Châteaux member.
People who want modern architecture and a night sky with no light pollution in it.
Not every suite has the retractable roof, so book the Sky category deliberately. This is under an hour from Lisbon, which makes it the easiest Alentejo escape on the list.

The hotel’s own site is the first link on purpose: a small hotel keeps more of what you pay there, and requests — a particular room, a late arrival — reach someone who can act on them. Compare it against the aggregator before you decide; neither link earns this site anything.
