Baixo Alentejo is the empty half of an already empty region, a thousand square kilometres of wheat, cork oak and vine between Lisbon and the Algarve where the villages are small and far apart. Malhadinha Nova sits in the middle of it, on an estate of about a thousand acres near Albernoa, and the hotel takes up only a small corner of the land.

It is run by the family that owns it, several generations of them, and the grandmother still works on the property. That is not a marketing line but the operating reality, and it shapes the tone: informal, unhurried, closer to being someone's guest than a hotel guest.

The 23 rooms and suites are spread across villas set apart in the landscape rather than gathered in one building, and they vary a great deal. Some have full kitchens and private pools. Others have fireplaces, wide terraces, and in one case a grand piano. What they share is terracotta floors, high wood-beamed ceilings and a restraint that keeps the architecture traditional even where the furniture is contemporary.

The estate is a serious winery, and tastings and cellar tours are the centre of the offer. Beyond that there are horses, a riding school and stables, an infinity pool tiled in blue, bicycles, and a spa with a hot tub, hammam and treatments. There are also introductory classes in beekeeping, archery and cooking, which sounds like resort filler and in practice works because the estate genuinely does all of these things.

The kitchen is overseen by Joachim Koerper, who holds a Michelin star at his Lisbon restaurant, and cooks almost entirely from the estate: eggs, olive oil, vegetables, meat.

It holds one Michelin Key and is a member of Relais & Châteaux. Beja is the nearest town of any size, Lisbon around two hours, and Faro about ninety minutes.

Who it’s for

Wine drinkers and families who want space, horses and almost nobody else around.

Worth knowing

Baixo Alentejo is one of the emptiest regions in southern Europe. There is nothing within walking distance and a car is essential.

Book direct where you can

The hotel’s own site is the first link on purpose: a small hotel keeps more of what you pay there, and requests — a particular room, a late arrival — reach someone who can act on them. Compare it against the aggregator before you decide; neither link earns this site anything.
