Descobertas Boutique Hotel
Eighteen rooms in a Ribeira warehouse, one floor each for Cape Verde, India, Brazil and Macau.
The Ribeira is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photographed waterfronts in Europe, which means most of it is now given over to visitors. Descobertas sits in a backstreet just off it, in a building that once housed a trade association, and the industrial bones are still exposed: massive stone walls, iron pillars, heavy timber beams.
The name means discoveries, and the theme runs one floor at a time. Each of the four floors takes a former Portuguese territory as its reference, Cape Verde, India, Brazil and Macau, and the decoration follows: Indian silk slippers, African textiles, Chinese ceramics, cushions sewn from old tea and coffee sacks. The lobby is full enough of these things that passers-by occasionally walk in assuming it is an antique shop.
There are 18 rooms across the four floors, in Classic, Superior, Deluxe and Family categories, including two triples. Rooms are comfortable rather than large, and the attic-level rooms with skylights are the ones to think about carefully, since they trade headroom for character. Breakfast gets consistently good notices.
The hotel opened in 2015, founded by a Mozambican entrepreneur who already ran a resort in Pemba, came to Porto, and decided to build his second here.
Position is the argument. The Dom Luís I bridge is two minutes away, the Palácio da Bolsa and the church of São Francisco about the same, Ribeira Square is on the doorstep, and São Bento station and Avenida dos Aliados are around 800 metres uphill. The Postigo do Carvão, a gate in the medieval river wall, is beside the hotel.
The practical catch is access. The street is pedestrianised and the Ribeira is a restricted traffic zone. A barrier at the top of the street opens only between 6.30 and 11.00 and again between 17.30 and 20.00, there is no hotel parking, and nearby public car parks are expensive. Arrive by taxi.
Travellers who want to be inside the Ribeira, in a building with stone walls and iron pillars.
No hotel parking, and vehicle access to the street is restricted to two short windows a day. Plan to arrive by taxi and use a public car park.
